Sarasota Music Club’s 2018-2019 performance season begins on October 19, with monthly music performances scheduled through April.
The season kicks off with Dale Jensen, flute, and Barbara Jensen, piano, in a program affectionately referred to as a “Flututorial.” Both are seasoned performers, including Dale’s having served as principal flute in Sarasota Pops for 21 years and then served as their conductor. He has also played with symphonies in Savannah, Mobile and Jacksonville, and he founded I Solisti d’Oneco, a woodwind quintet. Barbara has been a church organist for many years and currently serves as pianist at Manatee Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship.
The November 16 program features Mike Markaverich, with jazz piano and vocals. Markaverich has been performing in a variety of venues in the Sarasota area since 1988, with a vast repertoire that includes Broadway, blues, bop and boogie-woogie. He has 10 recordings to his credit.
Sunnyside Singers, under the direction of Suzanne Stearns, will present a holiday music program on December 21. A holiday luncheon will follow the performance (reservations and pre-payment is required for the luncheon).
On January 18, baritone Jason Stearns will perform, accompanied by Lee Dougherty Ross on piano. Stearns’ career includes dramatic roles with the Metropolitan Opera, featured soloist with the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C., and receiving a Grammy Award in 1996 for a recording of baritone solos with the National Symphony Orchestra.
On February 15, harpist Katherine Siochi will perform. Siochi, who is principal harpist with the Sarasota Orchestra, won a gold medal in 2016 in the 10th USA International Harp Competition. She has performed at Carnegie Hall and with orchestras across the country.
The March 15 program features Johanna Fincher, soprano; Luis Gonzalez, baritone; and Donna Smith, piano. Fincher has performed with symphony orchestras and choral groups throughout the Suncoast region, and Gonzalez balances an extensive music performance schedule with conducting and serving as a vocal coach.
On April 27, the Suncoast Music Scholarship winners will perform at the Annual Scholarship Luncheon held at Michael’s On East. The scholarships are funded through a partnership of Sarasota Music Club and Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota.
Performances are held in Sunnyside Village Community Center, Eicher Auditorium, 5201 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota. Social time and refreshments begin at 10 a.m., and performances begin at 10:30 a.m. (December program and April luncheon start at 11 a.m.) Performances are open to the public and offered at no cost; donations are appreciated to help support the Club’s performance and scholarship programs.
