Suncoast Music Scholarships partners, Sarasota Music Club and Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, have had to revise plans for 2020 scholarships, due to a recently developed funding shortage related to concert cancellations. The fifth annual scholarship program was planned to offer “up to $20,000 in music scholarships,” but only half that amount is now available for scholarship awards.
This funding shortfall mandated revisions for this year’s competition. The decision was made to use available funds to support current 12th grade students who will soon be facing post-secondary education expenses.
“We are truly saddened to announce our need to reduce and restrict this year’s Suncoast Music Scholarship Awards,” said committee co-chair Lee Dougherty Ross. “We hope to be able to reschedule auditions for current 10th and 11th grade students in the fall.”
New award amounts available for graduating seniors to use for advanced music education are: 1st place - $4,000, 2nd place - $3,000, 3rd place - $2,000, and 4th place - $1,000. Auditions will be held on July 25 at Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., Sarasota, from 1-5 PM.
The new application deadline for 12th graders who have not previously submitted an application is at 5 PM on May 15; applications should be mailed to: Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, Suncoast Music Scholarships, 1226 N. Tamiami Trail – Suite 300, Sarasota, Florida 34236. Those who have submitted applications need not reapply, but they will find new information on the updated form on the website.
Scholarship committee co-chairs Lee Dougherty Ross and Susan Hicks are hoping that more funds will be available to allow a competition for current 10th and 11th graders in the fall.
